How to write a research paper?

This is also my greatest concern. Look at this following link: http://research.microsoft.com/~simonpj/papers/giving-a-talk/writing-a-paper-slides.pdf

How to write Abstract and Introdcution for the papers

Trying to sit down quietly to write a good proposal, I have some doubts on Abstract and Introduction. What is the difference between them, I think the link here might be a good hint. http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2007/03/14/how-not-to-write-an-abstract/

Learning English from Prison Break

1.where do they have himincarcerated?
incarcerate: vt. 下狱,监禁,幽闭 lock up or confine, in or as in a jail

2.They rioted so badly a year ago.
riot: n. 浪费,挥霍 a public act of violence by an unruly mob; a state of disorder involving group violence

3.the guards pulled out
pull out: move out or away; bring, take, or pull out of a container or from under a cover

4.somebody didn't do their due diligence on this guy.

5.that's a heck of a story
a heck of 好一 后面可以加a的

6.if this is stacking up like I think it is.
stack up:加起来,累计 arrange into piles or stacks

7.I'd be pretty confident the charges will be dropped.
drop:stop pursuing or acting 案子撤销是用“drop”的

8.mess hall
a (large) military dining room where service personnel eat or relax 食堂

9.you are on your own

10.right as rain
right as…… 狄更斯的《匹克威克外传》中就有Right as a trivet的说法。

11.a man has a beef with another, he makes his problem known.
He wouldn't listen to my beef against his subordinates.

而have beef with someone的意思是wanting a fight with them. A person having something against someone else or wanting an argument or a fight

12.throw the glove down on you

13.then you are gonna have to run an errand for me
errand:a short trip that is taken in the performance of a necessary task or mission。

14.I wash my hands of both of them
wash one's hands:to absolve oneself of responsibility or future blame

If you persist in disregarding my advice, I shall wash my hands of the whole business.

15.go for the kneecap

16.give me a break
然后林肯说,我就是去见个人,give me a break. 所以后来课间休息我也都说let's have a break.

Reading from New Concept Enlgish- Book 3-1

A Puma at large
Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.
The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of "cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.
